Stroke incidence increasing

The stroke care market is strongly growing because of the increasing of stroke incidence together with the welcome improvement in survival rates. These two factors contribute to enlarge the number of people living with the effects of stroke that need care and assistance creating an actual emergency. Around 610000 EU citizens suffered a stroke in 2018, a number that will increase 34% by 2035.

Really high expenses

In 2015, direct healthcare costs alone added up to €20 billion in the EU, while indirect costs of stroke due to the opportunity cost of informal care by family and friends and lost productivity caused by morbidity or death were estimated to be another €25 billion.

Ineffective classical therapies

More than 40% of European patients does not receive proper cares, classical therapies do not always give good results and the abandonment of treatments is very common. Patients, indeed, are not stimulated nor involved, and because they don’t see good results in short time, they stop attending their therapies.

Armonia transports the subjects into a virtual environment in which they can interact through their motor intention, following the instructions of a therapist. Between the possible tasks there is grabbing and lifting a virtual object that the patient sees into the headset.

Detection

The control occurs through the imagination of the requested movement: the patient’s brain signal is recorded and processed in real-time by Artificial Intelligence algorithms that can decode the subject’s will to perform that specific movement.

Interaction

Once the motor intention is recognized, the requested movement is reproduced in virtual reality. The complete embodiment of the subject in the environment, the correspondence between virtual and actual arms and the syncrony between the mental command and the virtual feedback, will make the patient feel that virtual movement as a real one. This condition is what stimulates Neuronal Plasticity, accelerating the healing process.

Thanks to a particular pattern in EEG signal, our artificial intelligence algorithms can anticipate by 0,5 seconds patient’s movement intention, by doing so Armonia can exploit this gap to compensate the ordinary latency existing in every calculator.

Classical BCI systems require many training session on every subject that wants to use the system, our algorithms do not need this kind of configuration, they are ready to go after a really short setup time.

The performances improve every time the algorithms elaborate a signal they had never seen before, they always keep training on all the data that we collect on our cloud server.

Riabilitare i pazienti con la realtà virtuale!
Il concetto alla base di Armonia è la fusione di due tecnologie: BCI e realtà virtuale. L’interfaccia cervello-macchina ottenuta può migliorare la riabilitazione neuro-motoria per pazienti con lesioni cerebrali causate ad esempio con ictus ed impossibilitate dunque nel muovere gli arti superiori. In questo modo il paziente viene seguito dalla fase più acuta della malattia fino alla completa riabilitazione motoria accelerandone il processo.
